Due to the soft market we are in, the trend seems to be that companies are using their current resources instead
of acquiring new capital equipment. A new fiscal attitude is evolving which demands creative methods to keep equipment
operational through disciplined maintenance procedures along with getting longer life from spare parts and supplies
they are using in the processing areas. Retrofitting equipment with new technology is an approach some companies
are considering.
From the sanitation and hygiene aspects of the processing and further processing arenas, I look for the regulatory
agencies to push vigorously for material used in cutting surface and meat contact areas to contain antimicrobial
properties. This will happen due, in part, to recent bacteria issues which precipitated recalls from some meat
plants in this country.
Antimicrobial Treatment Incorporated In Parts
This new UHMW Plastic Materials with AlphaSan antimicrobial product protection is available in equipment and spare
parts. The AlphaSan antimicrobial compound is an inorganic material that incorporates the natural protection of
silver. This technology is safe and has proven effective in preventing the spread and growth of many types of bacteria,
mold and mildew. The USEPA, FDA and NSF International (Nonfood Compounds Registration Program) have accepted the
antimicrobial for food contact. Tests have shown that for most types of microorganisms, the treated surface of
this product will be virtually free of microbial contamination within three to four hours. This antimicrobial protection
is available for cutting surfaces, hand-held instruments and machine component parts where abrasion continually
exposes an effective surface. It can be applied to any process or application where plastics are used and, in some
areas, it may replace stainless steel. Unlike the AlphaSan antimicrobial compound, most other products offer antimicrobial
protection based on organic compounds. This antimicrobial is not a substitute for good hygiene; however, it acts
as a second line of defense in the fight against bacteria, mold and mildew.
